First, let's reassure you that you don't have to know geometry to make the "Double Trapezoid Poncho & Bag!" The name merely refers to the shape of the two identical pieces you knit up in a lovely lace rib pattern for the poncho. Margaret Radcliffe of Maggie's Rags takes this interesting approach and gets away from the traditional triangular or rectangular pieces sewn together for the completed poncho. Matching bag also knit in lace rib pattern.
