Here's a tricky bit of knitting, but well worth it! Extra wraps create horizontal openings as knitting is worked, while temporary stitches worked to the end form vertical openings when they are dropped curing the bind-off and are allowed to run down to the cast-on row. What's left? Why, checks, of course! Squares of stockinette and reverse stockinette suspended like magic from openwork strands. One skein of ultra-soft "Saki" yarn from Prism is all you need.
