Jazz Up Your Winter Wardrobe with Advice from Your Favorite Knitwear Gurus

Cascade Cabled Topper

Cascade Cabled Topper
Well, based on the ice storm currently moving through the Midwest and the snowfall projections across the U.S. and especially for here in Central Ohio, we feel safe in predicting that on Groundhog Day bright & early tomorrow our favorite little rodent, Punxsutawney Phil from the neighboring state of Pennsylvania, will see his shadow and forecast no hope of an early spring. So that means we need lots of inspiration to combat the influx of cabin fever we feel coming on. Plus we need ways to keep comfortable and warm yet fashionable for the cold-weather days and nights ahead. And as we have in past seasons, we are turning to our favorite designers and Knitting & Crochet Magazines for their best advice.

Highland Alpaca Colorblock Scarf

Colorblock Scarf

Tip #1: Classic Are Always the Best Investment for Long-Time Enjoyment. In the current issues of Vogue magazine to More, all of the editors are praising the return to classic, timeless lines for everything from blazers to skirts and more. The editors of More actually list classic knitwear specifically as one of their "Top 7" ways to enhance your wardrobe, and they point out that investing in superior fibers in the best way to go. They love cashmere plus merino and more exotic options as well.

So when we turn to our favorite knitwear sources for new classic projects, we start with that fashion guidebook -- Vogue Knitting. The Winter 2010/2011 issue has in the spotlight such "classic knits you'll wear again and again" as the figure-enhancing Cascade Cabled Topper by designer Michele Wang. This scoop-necked vest is a wardrobe must with its trellis-inspired design that branches out from a twist-stitch pattern.

Wool Clasica Axiomatic Mitts

Manos Axiomatic Mitts
Tip #2: Now Is the Time to Expand Your Repertoire and Try Colorwork and Fairisle Projects. From the fall/winter magazine from Debbie Bliss to the designs of Karola Gottwald and her staff at Gedifra, there are numerous ways you can experiment with multiple colors and have excellent results. Debbie Bliss aptly demonstrates her love of fairisle knitting in her Fair Isle V-Neck Pullover and her Cropped Fair Isle Cardigan.

Then the Highland Alpaca Colorblock Scarf is a new project from Gedifra's Creative Director Karola Gottwald and is a great way to try your hand at knitting with different colors of the same yarn without intricate stitches. Big enough to wear as a scarf or a stole, this piece is created with five shades knit in a combination of blocks and stripes using stockinette, reverse stockinette, ribs, seed stitch and double moss stitch for a knitting smorgasbord in one simple project. What a great way to learn new designs and practice at the same time!

Zara Bye-Byes Bunting

Zara Plus Baby Bunting
We also highly recommend the lovely Ambrosia Winter Wren Cardigan for experienced colorwork knitters and the Wool Clasica Button Yoke Cardi where colorwork beginners can experiment with two complementary hues.

Tip #3: The Best Way to Add Style to an Outfit Is with Accessories as Accents. We all have learned over the years how to jazz up our favorite jacket or coat with a lovely winter scarf and to add a bit of spice with colorful socks peeking out from under our jeans. So here are some ways that accessories can transform our winter collection.

We adore the funkiness and clever shaping of the Manos Clasica Axiomatic Mitts and marvel at such a spectacular way to keep our arms warm. Also the feminine, flirty Fresco Gwynedd Hat is the ideal way to keep your head and ears warm yet make your own personal fashion statement at the same time.

And last but certainly not least, we have great examples too of how you can enhance your wee one's wardrobe with these trends too. For example, the adorable, snuggly Zara Bye-Byes Bunting is a wonderful cocoon to protect that precious newborn. It's even decorated with hearts in honor of the season! Then the Rialto Aran Pea Coat is a terrific, unisex classic from Debbie Bliss. And if you want to have the look of multiple colors without the added labor, discover the wonders of the Big Baby Jacket featuring superchunky, quick-to-create Big Baby yarn from Muench Yarns.

Two New Traditional Wools from Classic Elite Are Easy Care & Affordable

Liberty Wool Molly Scarf

Liberty Wool Molly Scarf
We the staff at Yarnmarket have been so excited since we placed our winter order with the sensational American yarn company Classic Elite Yarns, we've been hardly able to contain our enthusiasm and wait patiently for the delivery. Classic Elite is well respected in the handknitting world for their devotion to natural, traditional fibers as well as luxurious, exotic ones and we really appreciate their superb pattern support filled with beautiful, eminently wearable styles. So this season we've enhanced our New Yarns for Fall/Winter department with a magnificent duo from Classic Elite.

Liberty Wool Abigail Sweater

Abigail Sweater

First off, when you crave an affordable, machine wash and dry wool concoction in gorgeous multi hues, take a peek at beautiful Liberty Wool Print yarn. Supersoft and spun as a versatile light worsted weight, "Liberty Wool Print" yarn is terrific for jackets, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, bags and shawls. And since it's easy care too (machine wash & tumble dry cool), it's marvelous for knitted & crocheted baby and children's clothes and accessories. Also keep in mind that it's superbly crafted in Italy of 100% washable wool with the well-respected Woolmark certification.

Then for those who prefer working with single hued yarns, Classic Elite has available Liberty Wool Solid yarn, a fabulous go-to fall/winter yarn. Add that it's velvety soft with a balanced twist that gives your knitting & crocheting superb stitch definition, and you have the perfect yarn for adult, children's & baby projects. These lovely solid shades are great used along, blended together in colorwork or color coordinated with its variegated cousin "Liberty Wool Print."

And, of course, the designers for Classic Elite have excellent pattern support for "Liberty Wool " and have created the pattern collection Liberty Wool (#9114). The Liberty Wool projects include everything from accessories to sweaters and jackets, and here are our favorites:

  • The feminine Liberty Wool Molly Scarf with its ruffled edges created with the short rows so popular in various types of projects (great way to learn this technique!),
  • The modernized Abigail Sweater highlighting an innovative positioning of cables for added texture,
  • The unstructured, easy-fit Liberty Wool Elizabeth Cardigan perfect for casual and dressy occasions and
  • The clever, mitered Martha Scarf for those who love entrelac designs.

  • Laura Bryant of Prism Yarns Applies Her Color Artistry to Multi-Seasonal Beauties

    Saki Beaded Circle Shawl

    Saki Beaded Circle Shawl
Since Yarnmarket first opened its doors here in Central Ohio, one of our absolute favorite hand-dyers has always been Prism Yarns and last month expanded our Prism collection to include the full skeins of all the "Stuff" yarns you so love. Now this latest shipment contains two more exciting new additions for multi-seasonal stylings well into the spring.

    Prism's Galaxy Yarn

    Prism's Galaxy Yarn

When you have created such an extraordinary yarn as Prism's Merino Mia, it's challenging to imagine just how the yarn could be improved. But with the creation of Saki yarn, we now see what beauty and versatility result from adding nylon to the merino wool fiber. "Saki" is a sock yarn that feels as great to work with as it does to indulge your little tootsies because it has just the right snap-back spring you need for your fingering/sport-weight knitting & crochet projects. Add gorgeous hand-dyed hues from color aficionado Laura Bryant plus machine wash & dry convenience, and you have the perfect choice for socks, lightweight tops, swingy skirts, even supersoft baby clothes & accessories. Check out the beauty of the Saki Beaded Circle Shawl, the Checks Wrap and the Dropped Stitch Scarf as just a few examples of how superbly "Saki" works up. Also remember that you can use "Saki" in all the "Merino Mia" patterns too.

Then for an easy, quick way to add a touch of glitz to any outfit, Laura Bryant gives you the perfect option -- quick-to-create Galaxy yarn. Superbly crafted of 95% nylon & 5% metallic polyester, "Galaxy" is spun as a super wide, super chunky ribbon yarn -- it's almost 3/4" wide! Of course, the beauty of "Galaxy" is gorgeous in Laura's marvelous hand-dyed color combos you so love. It is also enhanced with intermittent patches of gold or silver sparkle for added panache & glamour. And we bet you'll love how versatile "Galaxy" is whether knitted or crocheted by itself in decorative scarves, shawls and capelets or used as amazing accent & trim for other Prism garments. Take a peek at the Dots & Dashes Jacket and the Plaited Stitch Jacket for several ideas for garments. And even a simple garter stitch scarf created on large needles or hooks will be a real standout in any crowd when created in "Galaxy."

Elsebeth Lavold Launches Major Expansion of Her Silky Wool Collection with New Version

    Silk Wool XL Kyoto Cardigan

    Silky Wool Kyoto Cardigan
We always know we'll be seeing something special and innovative when we hear that such a well-regarded knitwear designer as Elsebeth Lavold is expanding her yarn collection and this season is no exception to that observation.

When a knitwear designer has created such a world-wide favorite as Silky Wool, she might be tempted to rest on her laurels. But Elsebeth has created lovely Silky Wool XL yarn at an innovative gauge to accommodate needles from size 7 U.S. to size 10. Developing "Silky Wool XL" as an all-natural fiber option, Elsebeth gives us this heavy-worsted version with the same subtly tweedy, slightly nubby appearance & texture.

"Silky Wool XL" is wonderful to knit and crochet with since it can transform classic garter and stockinette stitches as well as showcase Elsebeth's well-loved cable patterns. Spun by the same Italian mill that beautifully crafts "Silky Wool," "Silky Wool XL" yarn is constructed of 80% wool & 20% silk. Just imagine what sensational sweaters, shawls, hats, gloves, scarves, vests and more you can knit and crochet with such a superb yarn.

Just as a few examples of "Silky Wool XL" projects, we highly recommend as stunning illustrations of this terrific fiber gem and Elsebeth's approach to design:

  • The unusual Kyoto Cardigan that's sure to draw all eyes,
  • The tunic-length Silky Wool Mumbai Vest using baby cables for its shaping and
  • The distinctive Pretoria Pullover with its detachable collar and the gorgeous Viking-inspired cables for which Elsebeth has become so well known.

  • Iris Schreier Goes Ultra Bulky with This Great Quick-To-Create, Hand-Dyed Fiber Gem

    Ty-Dy Pinata Toddler Tank Top

    Artyarns Runabout Jacket
You know that you can always count on the American yarn and design company Artyarns for luxury fibers on the cutting edge of fashion, and this season knitwear guru and fiber artist extraordinaire Iris Schreier has really outdone herself with the latest merino she's added to her collection.

Ultrabulky yarn is her latest creation for your knitting & crocheting pleasure. Spun as a velvety chunky-weight yarn, "Ultrabulky" gets much of its softness and exquisite feel from its lovely construction. Constructed by tightly twisting together 12 strands of ultrafine merino, "Ultrabulky" is a fabulous wool that's not itchy or susceptible to pilling. Also it's beautifully crafted and hand-dyed in the USA from 100% merino wool, so you know you're getting excellent quality. Add that "Ultrabulky" is wound in 100-gram hanks for your convenience and so that you'll have less finishing work with your projects and you have a marvelous choice for your chunky projects.

We know that you probably have your own favorite chunky-weight patterns you have in mind for "Ultrabulky," but as a little added inspiration, here are some suggestions from Iris herself:

  • The casual, classic Runabout Jacket for everyday comfort with that extra pizzazz,
  • The feminine, form-fitting Top-Down Roadster Tunic,
  • The unstructured, easy-fit Ultrabulky Tunic Cardigan and
  • The clever Faux Entrelac Cowl that'll fool even the most experienced knitters.

  • February's Flower of the Month from Fiesta Showcases that Breath of Spring -- The Iris

    Flower of the Month Collection

    Flower of the Month
    February's Iris

We know how much the past 11 months you've been enjoying the limited-edition Flower of the Month Collection colorways from Fiesta Yarn, and it's hard to believe we're now introducing the last flower-inspired color combo in this terrific series. We at Yarnmarket have marveled at how beautifully the artisans at Fiesta interpret each new flower. We've also appreciated your feedback on the terrific monthly hues and all the gorgeous Fiesta fibers we've been introducing to you and are using your feedback to choose which new yarns we'll be making a permanent part of our Fiesta collection. As for the featured colorways these past months, we have enough hanks in stock so that you can still make several of the spotlighted projects, but our stock is limited to what we currently have on hand. So if you've been planning to pick up any of these projects, please be sure to order them soon to avoid disappointment.

    La Boheme Iris Wrap

    La Boheme Iris Wrap

Now for the 12th and final release in the series, the Fiesta fiber mavens have chosen the luxurious Iris as the inspiration for the featured colorway to hand-dye in three of Fiesta's most popular fiber gems. The iris flourishes around the world and has an interesting history dating back to the ancient Greeks & Egyptians and signifying faith, hope and wisdom. Perhaps these meanings are the reason, we often think of irises when we're looking for signs of spingtime cheer and beauty.

The love of and interest in irises we see today can be traced back to the early Greeks and its name coming from the goddess Iris, messenger of the gods and personification of the Rainbow now represented by the beautiful array of hues available in today's marketplace. But other heavenly associations have showcased the iris as rising above other floral options. The kings of France used the silhouette of the iris to develop their symbol of the fleur-de-lis and the iris became the emblem also of Florence, Italy, because of the significant role it played in the perfume industry. Today the iris is the state flower of Tennessee, and the fleur-de-lis is the symbol of New Orleans, Louisiana, echoing the city's French origins.

As inn past months, sometimes the yarns in the series are Fiesta yarns we already carry, but usually they are new Fiesta yarns for us. In all cases, the flower colorway is featured in a pattern collection free with your yarn purchase and the owner of Fiesta Yarns has decided that any purchase of FOM yarn -- even 1 hank -- will qualify you to receive the FOM pattern booklet of your choice so long as we still have it in stock. Then the latest color combo will be retired after its designated month, and that means you'll need to order your Iris yarn faves right away so that we can fill your order and re-order the yarn in time.

    Pattern Contest Rules

For the past two years we've really enjoyed co-sponsoring the annual design contest with The Knitting Guild Association (TKGA), and this year we're doing it again but with a twist. Now you will have two contests from which to choose so that you can go with the version and rules that best suit you as a current member of the TKGA (it's a great time to join too and enjoy the benefits of membership). Let's go over a little overview so that you'll understand the two options:

Members Contest: Any current member of TKGA is eligible to participate, and you don't have to submit the pattern unless you'd like your work to be considered for publication by Yarnmarket.

Masters Contest: Open only to current TKGA members who have passed Level Two or Level Three of the Master Hand Knitting Program. These entries require the written pattern to be submitted along with a photo of your creation (must be your original unpublished design).

Also you'll need to review the General Rules for Both Contests before submitting your entries. All entries must be received by TKGA by April 27, 2011 to be considered by the judges.

And now you may be thinking "What's in it for me besides the satisfaction of seeing my work published on the Yarnmarket website?" We will award three prizes in each contest (1st, 2nd & 3rd) with Yarnmarket Gift Certificates ranging from $500 to $200 (see the rules for descriptions of the prizes).
