Sweaters, Coats & Accessories: How to Dress in Comfort & Style All Winter Long

Airmix Looped Fringe Jacket

  Airmix Looped
Fringe Jacket

As we previewed last month, every fashion magazine you look over this winter and early spring is featuring a major resurgence of knitwear popularity. Everything from classic sweaters with an updated look to voluminous coats & jackets are available, and of course, the yarn companies like to stay up to date & current too with all the latest trends. So, of course, we've been busy adding lots of options to our Project Ideas area for your knitting & crocheting pleasure. Here we'll take the time to point out just a few, but remember that we now have over 900 projects for you to review for year round fun.

One of our favorite recent additions to the Women's Cardigans department is the chic & anything-but-ordinary Airmix Looped Fringe Jacket. Designed exclusively for Airmix, a lofty, airy wool/cotton blend from fashion-forward Gedifra, this chic wrap style has lots of attitude & flair. Other high-fashion options for your winter & early spring wardrobe include the:

  • Hermione Biggy Print Jacket, also with that wonderfully loopy fringe as its special detailing;
  • Loose-fitting Candy Bomber Jacket with its matching Candy Cloche Hat;
  • Double Happiness Jacket combining 2 great yarns from Twisted Sisters; and
      Naima Striped Turtleneck
      Naima Striped Turtleneck
  • Transitions Basketweave Jacket, an entrelac lovely from the designers at Noro.
  • At the other end of the trends scale comes the traditional, classic Naima Striped Turtleneck from Lang. Its use of two complementary (as shown) or contrasting shades (use your imagination!) in the cuddly soft, alpaca/merino blend Naima is terrific. This one will fast become one of your favorite sweaters for casual outings and as officewear we just bet you! Also new to the Women's Pullovers area is the Van Dyck Turtleneck. We love that it's such a quick-to-knit project in chunky-weight Van Dyck yarn from Needful. But we also are fascinated by how easily this pattern teaches even an Advanced Beginner how to knit & sew up the neckline without any fuss or bother. Other great pullover options included on our "favorites" list are the:

  • Classic Pearl V-Neck Pullover with easy striping from Lang;
  • GGH/Rebecca's terrific Almeria Wide-Neck Pullover crafted of fun & funky Almeria yarn and with its volume added to the collar so as to flatter your facial features;
  • Airy & light Kidsilk Haze Pullover designed by the fashion gurus at Rowan; and
  • Murano Cowl Neck Pullover designed exclusively for multi-textured, multi-colored Murano yarn from Filatura Di Crosa.
  •

    Bianca Swing Coat

      Bianca Swing Coat
    Then in a variety of mags over the past few months there have been major features & spreads about sweater coats emphasizing your creature comforts combined with a chic, high-fashion look and promising both in the same garment. An article in a recent issue of Marie Claire extols the virtues of the knitted coat & points out "the season's most delicious coat" is the supersized cardigan. We've recently added the Bianca Swing Coat as featured in the photograph to the left, and this classic design from Needful Yarns is a wonderful addition to anyone's winter/early spring wardrobe. We especially like the trendy toggle front closures along with the use of subtle texture in a secondary yarn on the collar and at the cuffs & bottom edge.

      Furry Tiny Tots Jacket
      Furry Tiny Tots Jacket
    We also added another loose-fitting cardi coat last month to the Women's Jackets & Coats department: the innovative Clarin Cardi Coat from Maggie Jackson of Maggi Knits. With just one quick look, you'll see exactly what makes it special with its leg-o-mutton sleeves and its removable base section to adjust the style & length.

    Another interesting & trendy jacket inspired us to add two related projects at once -- sort of a Mommy & Me approach to a fun duo yet the two designs are from different manufacturers. First, for Mommy comes the Carre d'As Bolero Jacket from the French knitwear gurus from Plassard. The lovely nubbiness & extraordinary texture of Carre d'As yarn transform this simple design into something sensational.

    Then for your favorite little girl up to six years old, knit up the Furry Tiny Tots Jacket from ever-popular Sirdar. Mixing the nubbiness of Tiny Tots in the body of the jacket with Funky Fur for that marvelous trim was a stroke of genius by the designer. What little one wouldn't look good in at least one of the many color combos available in these two fabulous yarns??? Of course, we also have other Mommy & Me possibilities and the classic Posh Cabled Hoodie for Mom & the Posh Toddler Hoodie for girls or boys is our most luscious set. Then we have many other choices for you in our Baby & Kid's Stuff area, so check out the Baby & Kid's Ponchos & Jackets and the Baby & Kid's Sweaters in particular for a more complete listing.

    Announcing Our New Sock Yarn Category Plus New Yarns & Needles Especially for Sock Lovers

    Tofutsues from South West

      Tofutsies from South West Trading Company
    Ever since the "Magic Loop" method of knitting socks on circular needles hit the knitting world, sock knitting has become a true phenomenon in its steady rise in popularity. Whether you got interested by reading Cat Bordhi's now classic Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles or you're a traditionalist who enjoys using double-pointed needles, we at Yarnmarket are joining the sock bandwagon with the new Yarn Types category we're calling Rocking Sock Yarns. In this one listing you'll currently find 28 different yarns recommended by their manufacturers for sock making including two brand new yarns in our sock yarn family. First off, take a look at South West Trading Company's first sock yarn creation -- Tofutsies. Who knew you could use chitin (made from shrimp & crab shells) to create this wonderfully soft & durable sock yarn? Only the cutting-edge, fiber innovators at South West would think of taking such an element, known for its wound-healing properties actually in other applications, and adding it to superwashed wool & traditional cotton plus their trademarked Soysilk.

      Lantern Moon's Sox Stix
      Lantern Moon's Sox Stix

    We've also added a terrific option to our collection of Cherry Tree Hill fibers with Supersock Solids. A great complement to their variegated Supersock Merino and ever-unexpected Supersock Potluck yarns, "Supersock Solids" will give you 20 choices in lovely hand-dyed single hues to use alone or in combination. And of course, all of these terrific sock yarns are ideal for other types of garments too including baby & children's clothes, gloves, shawls and much more! Actually the owners of Cherry Tree Hill are so committed to their sock yarns & their many uses that they're sponsoring the "2007 Supersock Design Contest." They are looking for large, multi-directional garments knit from any kind or mix of "Supersock" using from 6 to 12 hanks. All entries are due by June 1, 2007, and the 1st Place prize is $1000. Please e-mail your Yarnmarket newsletter editor for more submission details & watch upcoming issues of this newsletter for updates on the contest.

    In addition to these great fiber options, we've recently added two new double-pointed needle collections designed specifically for sock lovers. First off, we know how popular the Addi Turbo Circular Needles are with sock knitters, so now check out the terrific line of Addi Aluminum Double Pointed Needles. Starting with the sock-length, 4-inch beauties, these double points have the same German precision and sleek finish as the Addi Turbos for quick, smooth knitting. Then for those who love the exquisite hardwoods found in handcrafted Lantern Moon Knitting Needles, we now carry their new double points appropriately called Sox Stix. Available in blonde, ebony & rosewood & in sizes 0 to 5 U.S. (2 to 3.75mm), these beauties are 5 inches long & come in a silk chiffon & silk taffeta drawstring bag for easy storage & convenience.

    One final note for those just getting started with sock knitting, be sure to look over our DVDs collection. Included in this great line are several DVDs focusing on getting started with socks such as:

  • Sock Techniques 1 DVD from Lucy Neatby,
  • Socks I: How to Knit Socks on Two Circular Needles DVD
  • and
  • Socks II: How to Knit Two Socks at the Same Time DVD.

  • Welcome to Classic Elite Featuring Two of Their Spectacular Transitional Yarns Plus Excellent Pattern Support

    Wool Bam Boo

      Wool Bam Boo
    For almost a year now, you've been enjoying several sensational fiber creations from the Classic Elite Luxury Yarn collection including wonderfully marled, 100% camel Blithe; lusciously soft, single-hued, silk/cashmere blend Posh; and its superb, variegated cousin Posh Print. Well, now we are pleased to welcome the regular Classic Elite line to the Yarnmarket family. Well known for terrific fiber, texture & weight options and traditional designs with a modern twist, nowhere is this so well illustrated as with the two elegant fiber creations from Classic Elite that we've added for your winter & spring fashions.

    Luxe Pattern Booklet (#9075)

      Luxe Pattern Booklet (#9075)
    First, we recommend that you experience their delicious concoction Lush up close & personal. This yarn is the perfect example of what happens when you bend two totally different fibers so superbly that they're in ideal harmony. Mixing angora rabbit fur with wool produces what the well-respected Knitter's Review calls "a lovely, cohesive, full-bodied yarn with great handle, spring & durability." Without the telltale furriness of other angora blends, "Lush" has wonderful softness & body comparable to worsted-weight cashmere but at less than half the cost.

    Second but definitely not in second place is Classic Elite's marvelously exotic yet eco-friendly Wool Bam Boo. Combining superbly soft wool with exotic & environmentally-friendly, readily renewable bamboo gives you a splendid DK-weight choice for your winter & spring fashions while helping the environment at the same time. The result is a fabulous yarn with sensational drape, velvety softness & a subtle sheen. Also because the dyes are absorbed so well by the bamboo fiber, the colorways of "Wool Bam Boo" are vivid & true for all your lovely knitted & crocheted creations.

    Of course, you can count on us to have in stock for you wonderful designs to support these new yarn collections, so we've also added the Classic Elite design line to our Books + Patterns department. To give you wonderful inspiration for creating with "Lush" & "Wool Bam Boo," we recommend Luxe Pattern Booklet (#9075) for fabulous pullovers, cardigans, jackets, tops, even a coat & a skirt! Included in this collection of 12 patterns are a cropped cardi & a top in "Lush" plus 2 pullovers & a cabled cardigan in "Wool Bam Boo." And after just a quick peek at these spectacular projects, we can certainly understand why this pattern booklet deserves to have "luxe" in the title!

    Check Out Fabulous New Yarns from Anny Blatt, Bouton d'Or, Filatura Di Crosa & Cherry Tree Hill

      Angora Super
      Angora Super
    We know you rely on us to carry terrific, innovative yarns to keep you and yours in style all season long, we've definitely added even more yarns from some of your favorite companies in the past two weeks. The French chic of Anny Blatt is unparalleled in the yarn industry, and we've expanded our collection to include two more superb Anny Blatt creations.

    For one of the most decadently soft textures available in the world today, you must experience French angora up close & personal, and we recommend Angora Super for this luscious experience. Available in lovely solids & multis, "Angora Super" is definitely designed for discerning knitters & crocheters around the world. With minimal shedding & flyaway, this velvety creation is ideal for delicious scarves & shawls, sumptuous sweaters & jackets and divine hats & gloves. So who do you know most deserving of such a wonderful gift crafted of "Angora Super" by your talented fingers? Besides yourself, of course!

    Then for those who prefer their French panache rendered in terrifically soft synthetic fibers, we now have in stock Fourrure for your knitting & crocheting pleasure. Again as a result of that superb French craftsmanship, "Fourrure" is one of the thickest, fluffiest eyelash yarns we've ever enjoyed. It's ideal for high-fashion texture & detailing yet with comfy softness you just want to cuddle next to your skin. No wonder it's called "Fourrure," which is French for "covered in fur"! We've also added the Anny Blatt pattern collection to our line, so be sure to check out the wonderful pattern support available in these high-fashion books.

      Filatura's Mama
      Filatura's Mama
    Then from our other favorite French design house -- Bouton d'Or -- comes the beautiful creation Songe. When you're looking for a DK-weight yarn with lustrous, subtle sheen without being too glitzy, then "Songe" is the perfect choice for you. Its understated elegance is epitome of French chic & style with its rayon sheen combined carefully with a little mohair fuzz for truly outstanding garments & accessories for your wardrobe year round. The extraordinary designers of Anny Blatt & Bouton d'Or have put their creative skills to work with "Songe" and other exquisite fibers from these two collections, so be sure to enjoy their latest patterns in Anny Blatt: Automne-Hiver #195, Anny Blatt: Automne-Hiver #197, Bouton d'Or: Automne-Hiver #85 and the adorable kids' collection Bouton d'Or: Layette et Enfants #15.

    Then besides terrific sock yarns, Cherry Tree Hill is known for splendid fibers in those marvelous CTH color combinations, and we've added another such lovely to our extensive Cherry Tree Hill offerings. Take a look at lusciously soft, quick-to-create Mohair Thick & Thin, available in 18 colorways. This chunky-weight fiber blend of mohair, wool & nylon knits & crochets fast on large hooks & needles in jackets, shawls, bags and other accessories. It's also a great addition to Cherry Tree Hill's "Thick & Thin" line that also includes the original Thick & Thin and its glamorous cousin Glitter Thick & Thin.

    Last but certainly not least, we know how much you enjoy knitting & crocheting for your favorite little ones, so we've expanded the Filatura Di Crosa Yarn collection once again to include the newest baby yarn in the line. From our first glimpse & feel of Mama, all we could say was "Mama Mia" because of its terrific softness. Then with its blend of wool & cotton, it's a great year-round option for those precious little ones in your life. Add the variegated hues & textures of "Mama" to the mix plus it worsted weight, and you have a real winner for those baby & children's clothes & accessories you enjoy creating. Also we recommend the accompanying Filatura Di Crosa Baby to Toddler booklet with its cute designs.

    Spring Comes Very Early to Yarnmarket with New Berroco Yarns & Pattern Booklets

      Bonsai by Berroco
      Bonsai by Berroco
    Yes, we know that for many of us are still enjoying the thrills & challenges of winter and cold weather, but on Groundhog's Day last week the little critter didn't see his shadow, so spring must not be that far off or so the legend says. And for those who are getting a bit of cabin fever with the brisk winds, icy road conditions and snow-covered fields & sidewalks as found in much of the U.S. right now, the promise of spring may be enough to keep you optimistic & content. Of course, we can count on one of our very favorite yarn companies & best Yarnmarket partners to get an early start on the next season, and Berroco has fulfilled our expectations quite splendidly.

    First off, Berroco's lovely ribbon yarn Bonsai is a wonderful addition to the exotic & eco-friendly marketplace. Inspired by the rhythmic markings on a bamboo stalk, "Bonsai" is crafted of readily renewable bamboo woven into a narrow strand wrapped with a delicate, shiny nylon band. The resulting yarn has exquisite drape & a touch of sheen & glimmer for all your warm-weather knitting & crochet projects.

      Berroco #262: Yin Yang
      Berroco #262: Yin Yang
    Also new for spring from Berroco comes the splendid cotton, acrylic & nylon blend Nostalgia. "Nostalgia" is a lightweight, easy-to-knit or crochet fiber blend with a subtle hint of shimmer. It also has an extraordinary jersey-like feel as a finished fabric and is fabulous in tops, bags, hats, cardis and more!

    Now, of course, of all the yarn companies in the Yarnmarket family, Berroco is one of the very best at supporting their yarns with stylish yet wearable designs & projects, and Spring 2007 is no exception. Premier designers Margery Winter & Norah Gaughan generously share their creative vision with you in the 8 newest Berroco pattern booklets all now in stock at Yarnmarket for your knitting & crocheting pleasure:
