YARNMARKET.COM NEWS ISSUE #2
Renowned forecaster of modern trends, Faith Popcorn, believes it is our growing desire for simple living and a renewed appreciation of handmade articles that has fueled the new popularity of knitting. She says, "Smooth, shiny and uniform is now equated with crude and cheap, especially when compared with the individuality of hand crafted products." She adds, "Any craft as applicable and pragmatic as knitting has a great future." Faith Popcorn is famous for her predictions about consumer behavior, and is perhaps best known for coining the phrase "cocooning" in reference to our increasing desire to entertain and relax in our own homes. Another popular theory as to why knitting has suddenly become cool is that the pace of life and mass market consumerism has heralded renewed interest in home and family -- and that translates into greater interest in crafts and creativity.
More celebrity knitters! It seems that everyone’s getting in on the fun: designer Isaac Mizrahi, Lauren Ambrose of ‘Six Feet Under,’ Rebecca Budig of ‘All My Children’ and Madelaine Albright. Hand-knitted sweaters have recently been featured in movies such as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and Cider House Rules. Those of you who appreciated the wonderful costume designs of ‘Lord of the Rings’ will be interested to know that the knitted tunics took a team of six to create – 50 items in all, including tunics, leggings and hoods to be worn with chain mail.
With 10 different needle heads and 6 cords, the Denise Interchangeable Knitting Needle Kit is an absolute must-have – especially for travelers who’ve had difficulty with their regular size knitting needles. Berroco Opulent FX is so beautiful and unique we were anxious to try it ourselves. And, as we suspected, the look is sensational. Knitting for Kids Although we know that knitting has become unbelievably popular among the younger crowd, we were surprised when we learned that Matthew, the 7-year old son of our Customer Service Rep Lynn, arrived home from school with a bag containing yarn and needles. His teacher at Brice Christian Academy, had provided the class with the supplies so she could teach them all – boys and girls – how to knit. She thinks it’s a great way for them to learn eye-hand coordination while participating in an activity that will help them relax. And what a constructive way to do it! They’ll each end up with a completed project they can be proud of…and they’ll have learned a new skill they can use for the rest of their life. If you’ve got a young boy or girl who would benefit from this relaxing hobby, we suggest you start off with one of the thicker wools, like Rowan Polar because it’s so much easier for tiny hands.
