A Tradition of Leadership

If you were in Wakefield, England, in the 1930s and you were looking for the perfect new name for your yarn company, you'd want one that evoked images of quality and leadership. You'd want a name that conjured up visions of strength and longevity and bold, magnificent color. If you happened to be Fred Harrap, son of the owner of a spinning company, you just might select the word Sirdar.

The name that sounds so exotically foreign to many of us is taken from the title of one of Britain's famous military leaders, Lord Kitchener. After serving in the Nile Campaign in the 1880s he was assigned as Sirdar of the Egyptian Army. That is, British Commander-in-Chief.

Odd name for a yarn company, perhaps, but a name that almost 70 years later resonates throughout the world of knitters.

When the company was founded in the 1800s, by the two Harrap brothers, it spun only wool. When Fred took over he decided that Sirdar should spin hand knitting yarns and sell them directly to independent retailers. It was under Fred's visionary direction that the company grew passionate about creating inspirational yarns that knitters — and then crocheters — would use to create fashionable garments.

In 1960, the company's existing reputation for style was propelled forward when Mrs. Jean Tyrrell, Fred's daughter and Sirdar CEO, obtained editorial exposure for her products in women's fashion magazines. Through those popular vehicles Sirdar was introduced to a vast new market of hand knitters.

Much has changed since the Harrap family first started their company. Now, a new team of fiber experts directs the organization, carrying on the tradition of excellence established by its original owners and taking the respected brand forward into the 21st century.

No longer is yarn produced in a single facility in the countryside. This new breed of yarn executive searches the world for the finest fibers, traveling extensively to their global operations to ensure that every facility conforms to the company's standards of excellence. They are diligent in offering their loyal consumers the finest quality of stylish yarns at an affordable price.

Sirdar has been well known and highly respected in its homeland for over a century, and has in recent years gained acceptance and popularity in North America. As Sirdar established itself in "the new world," its directors realized the opportunity to create another brand that would offer the same quality of yarns but with an emphasis on the nobler fibers: Extre Fine Merino, Silk and Cashmere.

This bold move proved to be a formula for worldwide success that rounded out the company's range of offerings: the Hayfield brand for economy acylic yarns; Sirdar for the middle to upper end yarns featuring blends of wool, acrylic and nylon. And, today, Sublime offers fine quality yarns to the niche, boutique market seeking High Street style.

Today, Sirdar Yarns operates with the same principles that made it successful many years ago — with integrity, concern for its employees, and with a view to fashion that takes its designers from the frenzied fashion cavalcade by manufacturers attending Pitti Filati in Florence, Italy to the smaller, more sedate TNNA show for yarn retailers in Columbus, Ohio.

Wherever they venture as they source yarns and search for fashion inspiration, the people at Sirdar remain proud of their company and brands, and steadfastly loyal to their employees and customers. After over 100 years of uninterrupted operations, they work hard to ensure that Sirdar remains among the most respected hand knitting companies in the United Kingdom, supplying yarn and design to knitters in over 25 countries around the world.

Designer Spotlight
Sublime Pattern Book #641
Sublime Pattern Book #641

If you were responsible for knitting designs at one of the world's largest and most successful yarn producers, how would you approach your work? The experts at Sirdar have created a powerhouse of three on-staff designers who bring their personal sense of style, fabric and color to the patterns that knitters around the world adore.

Julie Langham is the Senior Designer whose expertise is being passed down to Bryony Phillips and Angela Hatton, Designers who demonstrate the ingenuity and style that has made the Sirdar brand famous. Sometimes freelance designers like Debi Birkin are also brought in to create specialty items like toys.

Sirdar recruits fashion graduates who have a keen eye for colors and fashion trends, and are able to develop original, wearable designs. They are, without exception, passionate knitters. And they are more likely than not to be long-standing Sirdar customers.

Before these designers can begin their work, they go through the difficult process of choosing yarns from the myriad of options available. The ones they select are hand knit into full garments so they can really get an idea of how they perform. Then the experts at Sirdar consider the market the yarn would appeal to, the variety of design uses that the yarn offers, and the cost of a typical garment.

Once they're satisfied a particular fiber meets their stringent criteria, they examine the initial color palette. They determine whether new shades are needed to supplement the line, and then — finally — the designers are set free to create the inspirational patterns we enjoy in their numerous books.

Little Vintage Coat

While Sirdar claims to have no signature style, they have become known over the years for their astounding library of adorable baby and children's wear. Very often, when you see a baby snuggled up in a soft, cushy hand-knitted outfit or blanket, the yarn in those items is from Sirdar. Whether it's Snuggly Snowflake Chunky, Snuggly DK or Tiny Tots, the yarn is soft for baby's delicate skin and wonderfully washable for Mom. They styles, of course, are sweet, innocent and charming.

Throughout the world of knitters and crocheters, the company is renowned for their classic baby and aran knits.

Sirdar's designers say they try to take current fashions and present them in ways that flatter their customers...whatever the trends may be. They like to introduce stylish new knitwear shapes so their knitters create garments that look fantastic combined with other elements in their wardrobe.

From the popular Sunshine baby outfits to the Baby Crofter Ballerina Cardigan and Baby Snowball blankets, Sirdar delights any new mother with adorable pieces that are a pleasure to knit and practical to use.

Even the upscale Sublime brand offers patterns that flatter the fussiest girl or boy. The Vintage Car Coat for boys is sweet, and the Vintage Smock for little girls reminds us of days gone by.

And, as talented as the designers are with fashions for little ones, they're absolutely brilliant with garments for grown up girls. The Sublime Garland Pullover is romantically flattering for every figure and the Sublime Crosshatch Top adds luxury to any woman's wardrobe.

As times have changed, the nature and format of Sirdar patterns have adjusted to suit the evolving market: they now provide instructions for a bigger size range; and instructions are now more detailed to provide the newer knitter with more information.

With a strong appreciation of customer feedback, Sirdar designers continue to improve their patterns. If a knitter suggests a better way to explain a technique, they're happy to incorporate the suggestion into future instructions.

They tell us that while the current trend is for for garments knitted sideways, on the diagonal or with multiple stitch patterns, they never lose sight of the fact that sometimes knitters just want to create a simple garment.

They say that the variety of garments they currently design is one of the great joys of their jobs. And they insist that producing attractive, easy-knits which encourage new knitters is satisfying to them.

Their Big Softie leaflets are aimed at new knitters, using simple stitches and clear, jargon-free instructions. Their goal is to help beginners build their knitting confidence without having to learn the sometimes complicated "knitting language" experienced knitters take for granted.

Where do they think fashion is taking us in the upcoming fashion season? They say that there's a strong trend toward classic aran stitches, but the ongoing themes for garment shapes will be waterfall detailing, envelope fastenings, and asymmetrical fronts.

These hard-working designers who bring us the patterns we love promise they'll continue to provide us with patterns for the simplest of garments...and some that will prove a challenge.

For every member of the family, every taste in fiber, and every level of knitter, the talented design team at Sirdar continues to present us with irresistible styles that have made the company famous throughout the world.
