Each autumn, knitters await with bated breath the arrival of the new pattern books from the designers they adore. This season, imagine how thrilled they were to see seven new books from Debbie Bliss, each one reflecting her unique style and superlative use of color.
Debbie travels the world in search of inspiration, and as she discovers new vistas she also keeps an eye out for suitable locations to reflect the mood and attitude of her work. For her Riva book that features a wool and acrylic blend yarn with misty tones, she had visions of natural, organic landscapes to complement the yarn that has subtlety in its shadings. The rustic, misty Yorkshire moors provided a beautiful backdrop to the 11 designs for capes, cardis, jackets and pullovers.
In Debbie's Time for Tweed book, she used contrast to create drama and sophistication. Six tweedy sweaters are set in an elegant country home that reinforces Debbie's penchant for English manor classics. This book has tasteful, contemporary designs for all shapes — and for everyone from beginners to experienced knitters. Debbie says she saw ribbon trim used at the industry trade show, Pitti Filati, and was inspired to incorporate it into some of her patterns as an alternative to embroidery or beads.
She also used ribbon in the Ribbon Sweater pattern in her Rialto Chunky book. Debbie assures us that this piece looks far more complex than it actually is: a fairly simple cable with lace faggoting on either side. The Rialto Chunky book presents eight relaxed knits in the beautiful 100% extra fine merino yarn that's available in several gorgeous colorways.
Beginners will be delighted to see that the book Simply Glen uses simple patterns based on squares and rectangles. It's a fantastic transition for those who want to move beyond scarves into more complicated designs. Debbie says, "I think it must be frustrating for beginners who are intimidated by the idea of shaping. With most of these designs there is no shaping at all."
When you see the six projects in this collection, you'll be surprised that they're so easy to create. And, best of all, they're designed to highlight the ombre shaded effect of Debbie's popular Glen yarn.
The Paloma pattern book has nine new styles that feature the lofty chainette Paloma yarn. This soft, sumptuous blend of 60% baby alpaca and 40% merino wool creates a super soft fabric with a lot of spring to it. With its assortment of comfy looking tunics, jackets, sweaters and an easy scarf, it's difficult to guess which pattern will be the most popular.
"Having just seen knitters try the collection on at the recent trunk show, it would be difficult," Debbie tells us. "Many liked the waist shaping qualities of the mustard bobble and cable sweater, others the A line smock shape of the pale blue tunic."
In her Andes book, Debbie features a photograph of names that were carved into the ancient stones of High Rocks in South America. What's very touching, and quite a coincidence, is that the names on those rocks, "Nell and Will" are also the names of her two children! This collection of 12 designs makes wonderful use of the mulberry silk and baby alpaca Andes yarn that's available in natural tones as well as deep, rich colors like the teal that's so popular this season.
Of all the books she launched for fall, none is more imaginative than Debbie's Charleston Collection, inspired by writers, painters and intellectuals known as the Bloomsbury Group. Debbie says she always wanted to shoot where luminaries such as Virginia Woolfe and E.M. Forster met in the early 20th century near London.
"This location gave me a story to hang the collection on with a generous artist style smock and a curved jacket with a 20’s feel. And rather than ask the model to tone down her look or position I encouraged her to look rather haughty as I assume the Bloomsbury Group were!"
From her inspirational books to her latest magazine that features popular Scandinavian styles, Debbie Bliss has shown us again how cleverly and creatively she uses yarn to meld timeless tradition with modern lines. Once again, she has demonstrated why she remains one of the most respected and celebrated fashion designer for knitters throughout the world.

Last year around this time, we introduced you to Debbie Bliss who is known throughout the world for her traditional British patterns and quality yarns. We thought you’d like to know what Debbie has been doing lately and where this world traveling designer has been to gather inspiration for her patterns and develop new yarns for her line.
Whenever possible, Debbie’s delighted to have the companionship of her daughter, Nell, who knitters have come to know as one of Debbie’s models. That pretty little girl who used to delight us in her mother’s creations has grown up and is now studying literature and film at university. Debbie, her very creative and hard-working mother, continues to be an intrepid traveler who’s never in the same place for very long.
When we caught up with her, she was just leaving Muskoka, Ontario, Canada where celebrities like Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Martin Short and Cindy Crawford relax at their summer cottages. This northern part of Ontario is famous not only for the Hollywood elite who flock there each year, but also for its beautiful lakes, Canadian charm, and fabulous boutiques where local artists and craftspeople present their creations. Debbie had traveled there to meet with partrons of Muskoka Yarn Connection, a local yarn shop, before heading to Halifax and back home to the UK.
“In September I went to New York for meetings,” she told us, “and went to Canada at the invitation of Canadian distributors, Diamond Yarns and Baadecke Yarns, to do presentations with retailers in Muskoka and Halifax. I will be in Finland in November and then in the UK until January.”
Over the past year, she’s traveled extensively to seek out new products, introduce knitters throughout the world to her fibers, and to promote her books and patterns.
“This year I attended Vogue Knitting Live in New York ,” she told us, “and TNNA in Long Beach in January, and Pitti Filatti in Florence to look at the new yarns for Spring 2012. I went to the Handarbeit Fair in Germany in April to be on the stand of my UK distributers, Designer Yarns, and then to TNNA in Ohio in June, followed by Pitti again in July to see the products for Autumn and Winter 2012.”
Whether she’s traveling or at home, Debbie keeps her eye out for interesting locations for photography for her books. Her new Rialto Chunky book has beautiful shots taken at the Bolton Priory.
“When I am designing I am already thinking about the theme for the collection,” she told us, “so for the Rialto Chunky book I wanted a country location, but one that had beautiful stone work and ruins, which I thought would be the perfect backdrop for the colour palette of the yarn. For Riva I loved the subtle, heathery tones of some of the shades and so looked for a location that reflected this, the Yorkshire moors were perfect!”
When asked how her calendar for 2012 is shaping up, Debbie told us, “I’ll be attending VK Live in New York and Pitti (in Florence, Italy) twice plus the usual events that I go to every year.”
When Debbie travels she’s engaging with the knitters who appreciate her quality fibers and her classic patterns, and she’s teaching them about how she approaches her craft.
“I do a power point showing where I get my ideas from, how I choose new yarns, color palettes, flattering shapes, and then attendees get the chance to try the garments on. I love the way that although the sample sizes are 34” bust, many knitters find that even the larger women can wear them comfortably.”
The classes are a fantastic opportunity for her fans. “Book signings tend to be a bit formal. The presentations and trunk shows are more of a meet and greet and that is a great way of connecting with the knitters.”
She went on to add, “It shouldn’t surprise me any more, but I am still touched by the warmth and generosity of the knitters that I meet.”
She should recognize generosity: Debbie is one who generous credit to the team behind her success, “I simply wouldn’t be able to do what I do without the collaboration of others. From the knitters who work to often impossible deadlines to Penny Hill, the pattern compiler and Rosy Tucker, the pattern checker. My business is still a very small concern, and I work from home. We all work very long hours to get all booklets completed ready for the printers so we share each others’ pain!”
Well, the pain can’t be all that bad. When we asked Debbie what she has planned for the future, she happily told us, “More of the same!”
That means we’ll all be able to enjoy more wonderful Debbie Bliss yarns and patterns for many years to come.
