Need
Jean-Christophe
and Karin

When Europeans think of fine quality yarns and exquisite patterns, they immediately think of Anny Blatt and Bouton d'Or. These brands are now becoming more and more popular in North America where quality conscious consumers are discovering the exquisite patterns and beautiful fibers from this French fashion powerhouse.

The successful Anny Blatt line originated in France in the early 1900s in the area where Coco Chanel launched her career. Anny, the company's founder, created summer styles for carriage trade vacationers to Deauville, France, where G8 leaders recently met for a conference. Urged by her upscale clientele to expand her business, Anny moved to Paris where the support of her fashion-conscious customers enabled her to produce what have become some of the most respected yarns and patterns on the European continent.

Need
The company dog is happy
to escort visitors on a tour
of the factory.

Pierre de Loye, which purchased the Anny Blatt brand in the 1990s, owns two main factories: a spinning mill that manufactures the majority of the yarns available, and a dyeing house, both in Sérignan du Comtat. Both facilities, in the beautiful French countryside, are "green" to protect the environment. Outside in the courtyards are cats sunning themselves, birds happily chirping, and an old yellow dog that is all too happy to accompany visitors on their tour.

Karin Testaniere now runs the company that has been in her family for over two centuries. From her location in peaceful Provence she manages the people and processes that create the yarns, relationships with vendors who provide fine quality wool roving from Australia and South Africa, and the marketing operations that bring her exceptional products to knitters and crocheters throughout the world.

Need
Even though the company is very old,
the production line is modern.

Today, as in the past, the company pays meticulous attention to every detail in the manufacturing process — from carding to dyeing, spinning and packing. It is this commitment to excellence that has made the company a worldwide success. And it is their desire to create a truly impressive presentation that has made their products a favorite of shop owners and fiber enthusiasts who appreciate the fine quality products, elegant packaging, and breathtaking patterns that are developed for the two brands. The marriage of these two premium lines of yarn has created a strong organization that continues to grow, innovate and inspire over 200 years after its inception. Under the direction of Karin Testaniere in France, and Jean-Christophe Tarazona in North America we look forward to a bright future for a small company that sits like a jewel in the green, rolling hills of the Provencal countryside.

As you'd imagine, a company whose heritage boasts an historic yarn mill and a gifted French fashion designer has to offer absolutely exquisite knitting patterns. Admired for their complexity and respected for their classic appeal, designs by Anny Blatt and Bouton d'Or are stylish, tasteful, inspired and inspiring.

Today, the head of design is Anne Molineau who helps the company launch about 180 styles for adults and 150 for children each fashion season. This is a challenging task that demands an eye for fashion and attention to detail. Anne's process for selecting patterns is one that begins with extensive research. She and her team start with the discovery phase in which they seek out the upcoming trends for the season. They examine the styles and colors presented at fashion, decor and design shows and on professional web sites. Then they embark on a process they refer to as "pige," the extensive review of fashion and decor magazines, exhibits, and blogs on fashion and shopping.

Once they've scanned the fashion landscape, they develop their own concepts and prepare an "Inspiration Book" with themes, yarns and colors for each knitting pattern magazine they're about to produce. These books are distributed to freelance and in-house designers who use them as inspiration for their ideas. The company provides the yarn; the designers return with sketches of the patterns they envision and swatches of the stitches they suggest for their patterns.

Once Anne has completed the difficult — and thrilling — selection of items to be considered, samples are knit by hand for the final selection process.

When we asked Anne about the differences between the two lines, she told us, "Bouton d'Or means buttercup, the flower, so this fashion is more nature-oriented with natural fibers and sometimes undyed colors like in our Legende yarn."

"Anny Blatt style is very haute couture, for the active woman who will wear her Chanel-style cardigan at the office, while shopping or at parties, for a 'chicissime' look," says Anne. "The younger woman might even wear it with jeans. Anny Blatt offers exclusive styles that are conceived for women who like THE fashion."

Bouton d'Or is intended for the whole family, to be worn any day by all ages. Depending upon how it is accessorized, the same piece can be worn by a 20-year old or a 40+ woman. These are less complex designs that are fairly easy to knit, rarely using more than one yarn in any single item. The brand includes smaller designs: accessories like purses, phone covers, scarves, hats and mittens.

Maida

The magnificent Anny Blatt line features high-end yarns, like luscious angoras and cashmere. The colors are sharper and trendier because yarns, like the glittering Muguet and Victoria, bring luminescence to the color ranges. The Anny Blatt shade-on-shade fibers tend to be matte, so the combination gives a wonderful blend of matte and glossy that can be used to create unique and interesting designs.

Anne says she relies on some of the more avant garde blogs like The Sartorialist and Garance Dore for inspiration. "They always pick the very 'in' looks at Fashion Weeks. They find unexpected associations of styles, colors and silhouettes which turn upside down the dress codes remaining very feminine, chic and in."

In the upcoming fashion season, Bouton d'Or will be featuring spontaneous style with the "looks de rue" (street look). Their patterns will transform classy styles into very trendy ones. For example, they'll be pairing an Irish sweater with a belt and skirt — or lengthening and layering it. Anne tells us that the boyfriend sweater will also be popular.

In terms of fiber she predicts Mistral, which can be knit very quickly, will be one of their best-selling yarns.

As the new season approaches, you'll be presented with the new Bouton d'Or fashions in two new books: Cold Vision magazine which follows a day of shopping between friends in the Marais district of Paris and Weekend magazine which blends campus and city/sporty styles in a week-end lovers escape on the Canal St Martin.

Anny Blatt will feature Magazine Couture, luxurious ambiance in a Parisian condo and Intemporel, a day of fashion at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

You can see a preview of the autumn's styles in the Knitch Magazine review of their recent fashion show in Paris.

For decades now, sophisticated women of Paris have depended upon Anny Blatt and Bouton d'Or for classic, yet contemporary, styles created with quality fibers from a renowned manufacturer. With talented people like Karin Testaniere, Jean-Christophe Tarazona and Anne Molineau guiding the company they can look forward to many, many more years of style. After all, who knows more about fashion than the French?
